Claude Max weekly limit, explained
Claude Max has two meters, not one, and most confusion comes from mixing them up. This guide explains both using Anthropic's own help pages, with the dates we checked them (2026-10-15).
Two limits: the 5-hour session and the weekly cap
According to Anthropic's What is the Max plan? article, your session-based usage limit resets every five hours, and Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. The Claude Code help article adds that Max plans have a separate weekly limit for Fable, and that these limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so chat, the desktop app, the IDE extensions and the terminal all draw from the same pool.
What "5x" and "20x" actually multiply
Anthropic describes Max 5x as five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance, and Max 20x as twenty times the Pro plan's per-session allowance. The multiplier is stated for the 5-hour session, not for the weekly cap. Anthropic does not publish the weekly cap as a number. A third-party measurement by wokey.ai puts Max 20x at roughly 10x Pro on the weekly limit; treat that as an estimate, not a vendor figure.
Current published values
- Claude Max 5x: $100/mo (monthly billing only). Session: 5x Pro usage per 5-hour session.
- Claude Max 20x: $200/mo (monthly billing only). Session: 20x Pro usage per 5-hour session.
- Weekly cap size for both: unknown (not published by Anthropic).
When the weekly limit resets
Anthropic says the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account, and that your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription began. You can see the next reset in Settings > Usage. In Claude Code, the /usage command shows plan usage.
Limit resets and promotions
Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a limit reset, which puts either your 5-hour or weekly limit back to full immediately; your weekly reset day stays the same. Promotions also change effective limits temporarily; our changelog logs them, for example the artifact promotion that ended on Oct 15, 2026.
Is Max 20x worth it over Max 5x?
The only published difference in usage is the per-session multiplier (5x vs 20x Pro). Because the weekly cap isn't published, nobody outside Anthropic can tell you exactly how many hours of weekly work either tier gives. If you mostly hit the 5-hour limit, 20x helps directly. If you mostly hit the weekly cap, check Settings > Usage for a few weeks before upgrading.
